Right up to the day he is given his final flight orders. Every day, Jang is told how his actions will turn the tide of war. He is instructed that Hospital ships, typically non combatants, are being used by the allies to secretly ship troops, and thus, are viable targets for his attack. For several weeks, Jang is trained in how to fly, how to recognize the enemy ships, and most importantly, where the best places are to hit, to cause the most damage. Jang does not know what happens to them, but suspects they are sent to lower squadrons, or worse, sent to the Army. Any who show a sliver of disloyalty, or fear, are removed from the squadrons. They train in aerial tactics, and are watched constantly. Better than the rank and file pilots or soldiers. Billeted in special homes, the members of the "tokko" are treated VERY well. Since Jang isn't an officer, this does not bother him, as he expects to get his mission details when he arrives. However, he's not given any of the specific details. When he signs up, he's told that he will be performing strikes against the enemy, which may very well deal a death blow to the US Navy. Jang has a love of life, and of his family, and when the opportunity arises, Jang signs up for "tokko." Roughly translated to Special Attack missions.

I'll go into less about the history, and more about the pilot himself, and what drove the nation of Japan to try this horrific tactic. Here's a spoiler for you: Most of those Kamikaze pilots?
